Get the facts about hunger in Ohio
Though many of us may not realize the grave disparities that exist in our own communities, people struggle with hunger in every county and congressional district in Ohio. They could be our neighbors, kids in our children's classes – the possibilities go on.
U.S. Value: : 12.3%
Definition: Percentage of households unable to provide adequate food for one or more household members due to lack of resources.
Food insecurity is a social and economic condition where access to food is limited or uncertain. It differs from hunger in that hunger is a physiological feeling. In 2017, an estimated 40 million Americans, including 12 million children were food insecure. Food insecurity has broad effects on health due to the mental and physical stress that it places on the body.
Food insecurity is a complex problem and does not exist in isolation for low-income families. Many of the same families also struggle with issues like affordable housing, medical costs and low wages.
